November 2003: We’re Pregnant! We went to both grandparent’s houses for Thanksgiving and during the stay at G&G Skime’s I knew I felt a little odd but wasn’t sure what it was…maybe too much food?? We went out on the town Saturday night that weekend and went to Nicholby’s (an upstairs loft turned into bar that had bands play)-we had some drinks, and people watched. The next day we headed home. I remember thinking I knew we were trying and I felt odd so I took a test to see if perhaps I was pregnant. I took a test quietly and it was supposed to be 2 lines if positive…well god love though tests, it was vague…you could kind of see there were ..maybe two..not sure. So I told Chris I took the test and he looked for himself…we were nervous but unsure yet excited. We decided to wait until the next day to get a new test. We got the test, this time if you were pregnant words would read out pregnant or not pregnant….it took no more than a few seconds and the words PREGNANT sprang forth from the test. I think we both were amazed, shocked, nervous, and super excited all at the same time. While it was a little crazy to think we were actually going to be parents-we were very happy. Not being able to hold it in we called the grandparent’s of which you can only imagine their excitement! Slowly we began to leak it out to family and friends. When we went to the doctor a week later on December 7th 2003, we found out I was already 7 weeks along. A little while later we went back for a sonogram.
Cameron was from that point on nicknamed “the bean!” The size of a bean was how big he was inside my belly and we hadn’t chosen a name yet. It was an amazing day that I will never forget. I remember feeling so special that I was carrying him around-not something I can explain but amazing is the word for it ! I signed Chris and I up for 8 childbirth classes-which was way too much info for us but we thought it couldn’t hurt. Little did we know that a class can only do so much! He patiently went along with my need to overindulge in as much information as I could get my hands on. We had to drag pillows and a blanket back and forth to one class.
My pregnancy was wonderful! No morning sickness whatsoever! Auntie Drea walked many walks with us and thanks to good ‘ol Zion we took long walks everyday. Cameron was so popular that there were 4 baby showers thrown in his honor. One from Grandma Gordon, one from Drea, Amy, and Grandma Skime, one from the parents of my class, and one from the school staff. Quite spoiled already! That explains the clothes in the closet! I also worked the whole school year. His due date was a week after school got out. I worked til the last day and had him a week later. I remember feeling what I can only describe as swooshes in my belly (him moving around I assume) which then also turned into jabs and kicks-he had some feet on him that were pretty powerful! I remember being kicked in the ribs and hearing it! I always wondered why he felt like he was kicking way up by the top of the rib cage and when he came out so long I knew why! The ninth month I was getting swollen legs and feet and the hot weather didn’t help…no air conditioning in the classroom, and none at home…Chris would fill up a bucket of water and put ice cubes in it and I would sit on the backyard patio and soak my feet at the end of the day. At school I would put my feet up and send one of the kids to get an ice pack and put on a movie ha! People would tell me horrible stories of pregnancy and birth which I never understood why no one had any tact about them. I vowed never to be that person telling other pregnant women horror stories. I will spare you those! My apprehension did lay in the fact I would have to somehow have Cameron come out of my belly and there were only a few options and birth was scary to me….His due date came and went and Chris and I couldn’t figure out what to do with ourselves….He took me on the longest walk(what seemed that long being 9 months pregnant and due!) on the sands of Coronado Beach for a mile or so. I remember asking to stop while breathless many times He also began tearing all the bushes and weeds out of the backyard as a project since working on the computer was getting him nowhere-hard to concentrate.
